Remember that in your essays in the Analytical Writing section of the GRE, "long" doesn't necessarily mean "good." If a lot of that length stems from wordiness, you are on your way to a poor score. Every word has to count.<\/p>\n

All types of prolixity will be frowned on, but redundant combinations such as<\/p>\n

\u00abLes Fausses Confidences <\/em>was premiered for the first time<\/strong> in 1737. \u00bb<\/p>\n

will make your correctors particularly dyspeptic. If \u00abpremiere\u00bb (as a verb) means \u00abto show or perform publicly for the first time,\u00bb why would anyone want to say \u00abthe work was performed for the first time for the first time <\/strong>in 1737\u2033?<\/p>\n

Just write:<\/p>\n

\u00abLes Fausses Confidences<\/em> was premiered in 1737.\u201d Or \u00abLes Fausses Confidences<\/em> had its premiere in 1737.\u201d<\/p>\n

When you take a misstep in the form of a redundant combination like "premiere for the first time," not only are you adding gratuitous words, but you are blunting the expressiveness of the language.<\/p>\n

This practice of bolstering a word with another word that replicates part of its meaning abounds in mediocre media outlets, unfortunately. More examples I have seen recently that make me wring my hands:<\/p>\n

"return back"<\/p>\n

"progress-forward"<\/p>\n

\u201cpenetrate through\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cadequate enough\u201d<\/p>\n

Anyone who says "return back" reveals an abysmal ignorance of etymology. \u00abRe-\u00bb is a Latin prefix that means \u00abagain; back, back\u201d. So why would someone want to say "come back back"?<\/p>\n

Or \u201cPlease RSVP\u201d? \u00abSVP\u00bb stands for \u00abPor favor<\/em>\u00bb \u2014 \u00abplease\u00bb, in French. (and the \u201cR\u201d for \u201crespond<\/em>\u00bb \u2014 \u00abanswer\u00bb)<\/p>\n

The GRE scorers will hold you to high standards \u2014 the standards of the careful writer, who avoids such nonsense. Know the etymology of the words you use, and let the word do its own work.<\/p>\n
