About the TOEFL

What is the TOEFL?

TOEFL, Test of English as a Foreign Language, is a standardized test that is recognized around the world whose purpose is twofold.

  • The TOEFL test assesses the knowledge of English.
  • Predict success that students will have in an English-speaking academic environment. To this end, TOEFL uses “integrated tasks” in the oral and written sections that require the combination of two or more basic language skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing) all integrated into the same task.

The logic behind these “built-in” tasks is that English is used as in academia where it is rarely spoken or written without more, but as part of a dialogue in a concrete text, a conference or with other students. Thus, two thirds of the TOEFL iBT (and two thirds of the evaluation) revolves around listening and listening comprehension.
